Two months after the appointment of Bernhard Gobmeier as BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director, further changes are being made to key positions within the Superbike team. Rainer Bäumel, formerly the team's Technical Director, takes up the newly created post of Head of Race Operations with immediate effect. Stephan Fischer becomes the new Head of Development for BMW Motorrad Motorsport, while Josef Hofmann is appointed Managing Director of the Stephanskirchen factory. All three will respond directly to Gobmaier.

In mid-January, Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport will be bound for Australia. The next winter tests are scheduled for 26th to 28th January in Eastern Creek, before the team behind Troy Corser and Leon Haslam resume testing on Phillip Island on 2nd and 3rd February. Immediately before the season opens there on 27th February, Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport will be able to measure themselves against the other World Championship contenders for the first time at the final official Infront test held at the same track on 21st and 22nd February.

Thanks to the fifth place earned in race 2, Biaggi brought the point gap to 63 points between him and Leon Haslam (Suzuki), who was the last rider in contention for the title (413 to 350). A gap impossible to fill with only the French round at Magny Cours to go until the end of the season. Max Biaggi – with his fifth title after four consecutive world championships, from 1994 to 1997 in the 250 class – is the first Italian World Superbike champion.

In the manufacturer standings Aprilia (433 points) is 41 points ahead of Ducati (392). Nine points will be enough for the Veneto-based team to take the manufacturer championship.

But Imola was not the site of a simple race day: delayed at the start of race 1, Biaggi had to settle for a placement (11th). Race 2 was an entirely different story. Abandoning any use of tactics, Max forced his Aprilia RSV4 into the front positions, battling for the podium right from the first turn. The fifth place he ended up with handed Max the championship title a round early and evoked an explosion of rejoicing from the thousands of fans who had come out to the circuit to cheer on the most famous Corsair in world motorcycle racing.

“This is a grand day – commented an exhausted but happy Biaggi in the end – a day which I have greatly desired. I’ve often felt in past years like I hadn’t been placed in the proper conditions to be able to express my worth and to achieve the results that I know I deserve. This is one of the reasons that, at a certain point in my career, I chose this world, the SBK championship, and this is why I wanted to surround myself with the right people for this adventure – because racing isn’t just about speed, tyres and an engine. It is also about joy and having fun and with these guys, with this team, I feel at home. I want to thank everyone: my team, Aprilia, Piaggio Group, the chairman.

It has not been an easy season. Many riders have won races and if they had been just a bit more consistent, they would have been able to be more troublesome for us. The greatest moments were the double victories at Monza and Misano. It is something very special to win in front of my fans. But it isn’t over yet – there is still one goal left – to ride my RSV4 to the manufacturer title. We’ll talk again in a week and it would be truly fantastic to close out this wonderful season with another championship”.

Roberto Rolfo has returned to the Superbike World Championship for the Kawasaki Pedercini team, with whom he will ride the new ZX-10R machine in 2011. The 30 year-old Italian moves to the Pedercini team after one season in the Moto2 GP class where he took one win at Sepang in Malaysia and a third place at Sachsenring in Germany.

Rolfo already has three years' experience in World Superbike. In 2006, he raced with team Ducati SC Caracchi, while in 2007 he joined the Hannspree Honda Ten Kate team and the year after the Hannspree Honda Althea team. In 2009 he started the season with Stiggy Honda team but after only a few races he was replaced by John Hopkins due to the team's economic problems.

Roberto Rolfo :"I'm really very happy to return to the Superbike championship. My three years' experience in this fascinating and competitive championship was unforgettable and I will try my best to improve my preceding results. I immediately established a good feeling with the entire Pedercini family. They are reputable professionals and we are on the same wavelength concerning next year's targets. I decided to leave Moto2 because I'm eager to ride the new Kawasaki ZX10R and take advantage of all its great power. It feels grand to be back in Superbike and I'm determined to put a good season together next year. The FIM has handed down the updated 2011 WSBK calendar and as was the case in 2010 it features 13 rounds, which will take place at some of the world's most evocative and iconic racetracks.

The season opener takes place at the incomparable seaside circuit of Phillip Island, one of the fastest and most open circuits in the entire world of racing (photo). It, like many others, is an old friend of WSBK racing and it will of course feature as an official pre-season test venue, shortly before race weekend, on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22. Raceday itself will be Sunday, 27 February 2011 - make a note of it now. At Phillip Island World Supersport will also make its only non-European appearance of the year.

Early springtime at Donington Park will echo the very beginnings of WSBK in 1988, with this brilliant motorcycle racing venue all ready to welcome back WSBK racing after a year's absence. March 27 will be raceday, for the first of two races to be held in the UK next year.

April 17 is the day for yet another classic WSBK venue, Assen, while the first of three Italian-based WSBK rounds come along at super-fast Monza, on May 8. The normal European theatre of operations is left behind for a short period after Monza, and the Superbike class alone heads to America and the Miller Motorsports Park this year, for a race on Monday May 30 - on the Memorial Day holiday. Note that there will be no Supersport World Championship round at Miller in 2011, but the programme will see the reintegration of a round of the AMA Superbike Championship.

Two race weekends in a row will be enjoyed in June, the first being the San Marino Round at Misano on June 12 and then a new adventure beckons for the full WSBK travelling circus, the debut of the Motorland Aragon Circuit in Spain on June 19.

The wide corners and chicanes of Brno form round eight on July 10; the even faster layout of Silverstone has its latest taste of WSBK action on July 31. Double the thrills for British fans, and they will have several top riders to cheer on again, as they did in 2010.

August is a race-free month for all WSBK classes, with action reconvening at the historic Nürburgring circuit on September 4. An intense end to the season sees three European rounds, Imola, Magny Cours and Portimao, all coming along within a four-weekend period.

Imola has been reconfirmed on September 25, Magny-Cours in France is the penultimate round of the year on October 2, while instant classic Portimao is again the venue for the final round of the season, on October 16. Portimao will, in fact, bracket the WSBK season neatly, as it hosts the first official test of the year, between 26 and 28 January.

Ten rounds remain in the Superstock classes, as there will be no races for those classes in Donington, and their season gets underway at Assen, on April 17.

2010 APRILIA RSV4 R BUDGET SUPERBIKE vs FACTORY

Aprilia have announced the 2010 RSV4 R, a cheaper version of the RSV4 Factory. Instead of Ohlins suspension, the RSV4 R gets a Showa fork and Sachs shock, its 60-degree V4 makes do with aluminium parts instead of the Factory’s magnesium bits, and the chassis isn’t adjustable for swingarm pivot point, steering head angle and engine position.

Still, the significantly cheaper RSV4 R’s Showa/Sachs suspension is fully adjustable and the engine still produces 180bhp (though we suspect it may not be able to rev as high and/or as quickly as the RSV4 Factory’s engine). Also, with its ride-by-wire electronics, the bike still has three ride modes – Race, Sport and Road – for optimised power delivery for whatever conditions you might encounter.

If you can live with plastic instead of carbonfibre trim, aluminium instead of forged magnesium wheels and a bit more weight (the R weighs 184kg, about five kilos more than the Factory), the RSV4 R just might be the Aprilia for you with at least 20% less expensive than the Factory

The RSV4 Factory and RSV4 R follow in the mold of the v-twin RSV 1000 R range; the Factory is the range-topping carbon, magnesium and Ohlins-equipped model sold in order to homologate the SBK racers, while the R is fitted with more realistic components and priced to sell in large numbers.

While the R retains the Factory’s basic frame and engine, both of those are modified to lower costs. The R’s engine ditches the expensive and lightweight magnesium engine covers in favor of aluminum items, while the chassis has lost its ability to adjust the swingarm pivot point, the steering head angle and the engine’s position.

Still present is the fly-by-wire throttle and its three switchable power delivery modes. “Race” offers the full 180bhp and 115lb/ft of torque, “Sport” delivers full power but limits torque in the first three gears and “Road” reduces power to 140bhp and also limits torque throughout the rev range and in all gears.

How important for your morale was the double victory at Portimao?

'I had a strong feeling that the Biaggi-Aprilia pairing in this 2010 season could produce some excellent races and winning twice at Portimao is confirmation that we are at the top'.

And at Valencia you also showed you were up there at the front. What was missing for you to get on the top step of the podium?

'Let's say that we were very competitive throughout the entire race weekend. We could quite easily have won race 2, there was nothing in it, with a bit of luck we could have done it...but I have to admit that both Haslam and Checa were really strong'.

Compared to 2009, the Biaggi-Aprilia pairing appears to be much stronger this year. What exactly has changed? Are you more determined or has the bike improved a lot?

'That was just the first year of racing for the RSV4 machine and we needed to run it in a bit. Now we have prepared everything for the best and we can be up there fighting in every situation. I am really motivated and for sure I'm not holding back'.

If you had to choose between consistency, luck, bike, team and rider to win the world title, what would it be?

'Let's just say that to be a winner you have to have all of them, it's an explosive mixture!'

Who do you think is your main rival this year?

'It's a bit too early to rule out some riders who have a chance of winning the title and when I'm on the track everyone for me is a rival, there's no difference'.

Let's dream a bit: at the end of 2010 Max Biaggi is the first Italian to win the World Superbike title, on an Italian bike and with an Italian sponsor. What will you do in 2011? Once you've achieved that aim, will you say goodbye to everyone and retire or try and efendi the title another year, this time with the number 1 on your bike?

CBR 250's are an excellent bike to start off with if your looking for a sports 4 stroke. Revving to 21000 rpm you can imagine that they are quite nippy, and will out accelerate most things on the road with 4 wheels, unless they got a turbo, then im sorry your screwed, as I have personally tried lol!

Now at first glance you would swear that this bike is the same bike on the 400 page, it has the same paint job but there are suttle differences, and when you see them up close for real there is quite a difference! The cbr250 is more of an upright ride compared to the 400, it is also no where near as wide as the 400 either. I've ridden two different CBR 250's, one completely standard and the other slightly modified with a straight through can. Jesus Christ is there a difference!!, when I rode the one with the standard pipe, it felt like it wanted to scream but you could feel it holding back while going up through the revs.

Without the bafflein the exhaust its a whole different ball game! I couldn't believe how different it was, basically the guy had rammed something down his standard end can and removed all the baffle that was restricting it. I highly recommend it!!!

The only thing about these 250's is that they are a bit of a basdard to get parts for, I live in the UK, and obviously it was never originally manufactured here, so all the bikes over here are grey imports, which in turn means you have to get the parts from over seas if you want new ones.

Honda CBR250RR (1999)

The 'Babyblade', as it's colloquially known, has become one of our favorite quarter liter bikes over the years. It has lots of performance, with civilized road manners that allow the learner to come to terms with its considerable performance.

History

The Babyblade started arriving in this country in small numbers as a grey import until Honda MPE took up the challenge and added it to the corporate brochure.

Under the skin
The heart is a high-stepping liquid-cooled four-stroke four, with four valves per pot, that revs to a scary 18,000rpm. It's matched to a six-speed gearbox, twin alloy spar frame and a monoshock rear suspension set-up.

Starting: Simple, but ride it gently for the first couple of Km/s so it gets a chance to warm up properly.
Suspension: Quite basic ? minimalist forks, and a monoshock with adjustment for spring preload only.
Brakes: Twin discs up front with two-piston calipers, and a single-pot caliper on the rear disc.
Stability: Unusually exceptional. We've ridden several examples and they have generally been fast-steering (a little flighty at speed) though entirely predictable. The 9000-plus-km test bike (that's a lot of miles for a demo) felt less precise than we're used to with this model. Fiddling with the tyre pressures and steering head bearing tension would be the first ports of call then, maybe, a change of rubber.
Cornering clearance: How much would you like? You're only likely to touch down on a race track.
Performance: More than enough to be exciting, with a genuine 160-plus kmh on tap. It's delivered in a linear fashion, leaving all the decisions to the rider. It takes 4000rpm to get moving in a reasonable way, 6000rpm for serious urge, while 100kmh translates as 9000rpm in top.
Rider comfort: Quite good, despite the sporty ride position. Long rides can be uncomfortable, though a one-day play in the hills is well within the satisfied zone. Seat padding is fairly thin and suspension spring rates high, which is the price you can expect to pay for a serious sporting tool.
Pillion comfort: Forget it. The pillion perch is too high, with foot pegs that are bordering on fiction.
Vibration/harshness: There's an ever-present vibration happening, but t's not intrusive.
Finish: Average. No clear spray over the decals, though the fairing fit is good.
Looks: Aggressive, colorful and distinctive. Nothing subtle about it.
Extras: The Dunlop K510 sport radials fitted to our bike were premium kit, with lots of grip. We wonder if they contributed to the less than ideal feel of the steering, but didn't have enough time with the bike to be certain. One bonus of the high pillion seat is the capacious storage under it ? enough to handle a set of wet-weather pants.
Value for money: Priced at $9999, the Babyblade is more expensive than Suzuki's quicker RGV250 with its higher-tech chassis, which raises a performance-per-dollar question.

SUMMING UP
We can think of no better performance 250 as a stepping stone to the hot 600s, RGVs included. There's plenty of urge on tap -- enough to keep the rider interested well beyond the compulsory 250 provisional licence period. Avoid well-worn examples as the rebuild costs will be high. But never make the mistake of underestimating the Babyblade as a sports bike...

Following up on the success of the world's first zero-emissions motorcycle race at the Isle of Man earlier this month, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) has announced plans to launch a new electric motorcycle racing series in 2010. As part of the Road Racing Grand Prix Commission, the project will be led by Azhar Hussain, organizer and founder of the TTXGP. Says FIM President Vito Ippolito:

I am very happy to with this new Series, the future of the sport depends on our capacity as well as that of the manufacturers to innovate quickly. We are convinced that very shortly the motorcycle World Championships will be accessible to non-polluting engines as far as gas and sound emissions are concerned. Now that this important decision is taken, we have to work on rules and calendar to be ready to compete in 2010.

Details on possible entrants and regulations are scarce at this time, but we'd expect to see a number of competitors from the TTXGP take part in the FIM series, such as Brammo, Mission Motors, Motoczysz, Electric Motorsport and the race-winning team from Agni Motors. Expect more information to filter out following the upcoming eGrandPrix race at Mid Ohio on July 24-26.

In the final World Superbike track action of 2009, Hannspree Ten Kate Honda’s Jonathan Rea set the fourth fastest unofficial time in a two-day test, which concluded this afternoon at Valencia in Spain.

Despite a small crash yesterday, the 22-year-old, who finished his debut WSBK season in championship fifth place, completed 190 laps of the 4.005km Ricardo Tormo circuit with a best time of 1’34.2s as he tested a combination of new swingarm, front forks and electronics on his 2009 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade.

The Valencia test marked Rea’s first track outing since his coronation in the ‘Kings of Wanneroo’ meeting in Perth, Australia last month where the Northern Irishman won all three races on a stock Honda CBR1000RR.

Also testing in Valencia was Max Neukirchner, Rea’s new Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team-mate for the 2010 season, continuing his familiarisation with the team and the Honda CBR1000RR – a process which started in October at Portimao in Portugal.

The German ace spent most of 2009 on the sidelines through injury but Neukirchner has been training hard and his current fitness levels are high enough for the 26-year-old to have completed 160 laps during his two days at Valencia, setting a best time of 1’34.7s.

We’ve had a really constructive couple of days here and got through a lot of work. We evaluated three sets of forks with different internal specifications, a slightly modified swing arm and some different electronics, so there was a big list of things to assess. What we didn’t get much of a chance to do was combine all the good things we found into one package and we were still working through things when Pirelli asked us to test the two new tyres they had. One of them felt pretty good, but we didn’t really have the right set up to get the best out of it. Overall, I’m really happy though, because it was a big workload we had to get through.

Max Neukirchner – best time 1’34.7s
I’m really happy with this test, because it was really important for me to get more time on the bike and look for a good base setting. We only made some suspension adjustments and didn’t really test any new parts. I built up my pace slowly and only this afternoon did I really start to push a little harder when I had a good feeling and began to feel confident enough to open the throttle. This was only my fourth day with the team and I have not ridden very much since the crash at Monza in May. Of course, I still need some more time on the bike but I can go into the winter holidays with a good feeling now and continue my training, which has been quite intense recently. I did 160 laps here at Valencia and had no fitness problems; I might be a little sore tomorrow, but I’m feeling very good!

All the stuff that we needed to test here has been tested, and it was a lot of work to get through. The improvement from our race here in April is like the difference between night and day so it’s definitely been a good step forward for Jonathan, who has put in a lot of laps and worked really hard. We’re also beginning to find to clear direction forward with Max. We tested a lot of different settings so we will be able to narrow the window a lot more for him at our next test in Portimao in January. For now, we head back to our families in a very positive frame of mind and take this opportunity to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a very happy and successful New Year.

G-Strider, not G-String, is the name given to a new vision that Suzuki recently revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The ergonomic feet-forward design approach is complemented by an unprecedented level of information technology and electronic assistance on a motorcycle.

"Suzuki's G-strider is all about pushing the boundaries, introducing new ideas and speculating on where motorcycle design might go in the future," Perry Morison, General Manager - Motorcycles, Suzuki Australia, said.

"As with previous concepts such as the Hayabusa-powered B-King, Suzuki has incorporated technology in the G-Strider that may be pure fantasy or may make production next year ... that's what makes the concept so interesting."

Powered by a 916cc, four-stroke, liquid-cooled, DOHC, parallel twin engine, the G-Strider utilises Suzuki's Electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (SECVT), as found on the Suzuki Burgman 650 Superscooter.

Electronics feature extensively in the Suzuki G-Strider's design, with electrically adjustable handlebars, windscreen, rider's seat, footrests, and backrests for both rider and passenger, enabling selection of the most comfortable seating position possible.

The Suzuki G-Strider also features an advanced telematics system which utilises a bidirectional wireless infrastructure to support videophone communication and Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation assistance.

The G-Strider is equipped with an intelligent keyless ignition system and a self-diagnosis function, in which data from a range of sensors is analysed and results displayed on the liquid-crystal main monitor located behind the windscreen.

In addition, a handlebar-mounted digital meter with electroluminescent backlighting provides easily readable information about the bike's key functions.

A unique tank-mounted console with trackball control and large function keys, which can be easily operated by gloved hands.

Futuristic safety features on the Suzuki G-Strider include two rear-facing cameras mounted in the rear lighting system, which feed video images to the rear view monitors, replacing conventional mirrors.

A high-intensity-discharge projector-type light integrated with high-intensity light-emitting diodes (LEDs) form a powerful combination headlight, while the tail and indicator lights also employ high intensity LEDs, making the G-Strider more visible to surrounding traffic, even in broad daylight.

An intelligent cornering lamp system, which uses microprocessors to sense the motorcycle's bank and handlebar angle, illuminates the road on the inside of the turn accordingly.

Suzuki's G-Strider also incorporates a centre-hub steering system and a compound-laser welded front swingarm for enhanced rider control, and an anti-lock brake system (ABS), with the front brakes using radial-mount four-piston calipers.

The package is mounted on impressive 140mm front and massive 220mm diameter rear tyres to further its handling and stability.

Having seen his share of long-legged choppers, John Dawson decided to build a machine that was the polar opposite of the traditional custom. He wanted to put a torquey V-twin engine in a bike that handled as good as it looked. Thus, Buell Street Fighter was born.

Eric Buell founded the company that bears his name in the late 1980s on very much the same idea. He took Harley-Davidson Sportster engines and mounted them in exotic sport-style chassis, which resulted in bikes that were decidedly different than anything then being offered.

Since that time, the Sportster engines Buell uses have been treated to significant changes that result in greatly increased power, but the chassis designs remain that of a high-riding "crotch rocket" sportbike.

So what John Dawson did was take a Buell motorcycle and swap its tall, sportbike chassis for a low-slung hardtail frame by MC Worx. The original Buell forks and brakes were refitted, and John adapted a host of new hardware to create a low-slung bullet. Chief among them is a small bikini fairing incorporating twin headlights.

The result is a machine that bridges the rather wide gap between sportbikes and choppers. But in simplicity of design and unique treatment, John just did Eric Buell one better.
